The Centre for Leadership, Negotiation and Public Diplomacy (LNPD) of IDFR in collaboration with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) had successfully organised the Media and Malaysia Foreign Policy Course: Synergy in the Global Frontier. The course was held online on 12 and 13 of August 2021. Eighteen participants who attended the course were among media practitioners from NST, Al Hijrah, BERNAMA, Suara Sarawak, New Sarawak Tribune and Astro Awani, members of the academics from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Malaysian government officers from the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM).
This two-day course was specially designed to provide exposure on foreign policy and issues especially to local media practitioners in the preparation of reporting on current affairs relating to international matters and diplomacy. The participants were subjected to modules such as Introduction to Malaysia’s Foreign Policy; ASEAN-Malaysia Relations: Contemporary Issues; Bilateral Relations: Issues and Challenges; Multilateral Relations: Issues and Challenges; Maritime Issues in Malaysia; Islamophobia; and Consular Matters. These lectures were delivered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials namely Mr. Nazarudin Ja’afar of the Department of Policy Planning and Coordination; Mr. Mohd Suhaimi Ahmad Tajuddin of the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat (AMNS); Datuk Mohd. Khalid Abbasi Ab Razak Khan Abbasi of the Department of Bilateral Affairs; Ms. Murni Abdul Hamid of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Division; Mr. Shahrudin Onn of the Department of Maritime Affairs; Ms. Farlina Said of ISIS Malaysia; and Mr. Saravana Kumar of the Consular Division.
The opening remark was delivered by the Chairman of the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), Datuk Dr. Chamil Wariya who himself, participated in the entire sessions throughout this course. During the closing ceremony, the Director General of IDFR, Dato’ Mohd Zamruni Khalid personally expressed his highest gratitude to the Chairman of MPI for the IDFR-MPI partnership as well as his best compliment to all participants for their commitment throughout the course.
