YBhg. Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has graciously launched the Opening Ceremony of the 13th Asian Bioethics conference earlier today, 27 August 2012. The four-day conference which is concurrent with the Sixth UNESCO Asia-Pacific School of Ethics Roundtable will feature a total of 104 speakers from 20 countries. The Conference is organised by Asian Bioethics Association (ABA), Asia Pacific Forum on Ethics and Social Justice (Malaysia) and Regional Unit in Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific (RUSHSAP) in collaboration with four Strategic Partners which are IDFR, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (UKM), Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS-UKM) and Eubios Ethics Institute.

This is the first time the Bioethics Conference is being held in Malaysia and it is very timely with the recently launched Malaysian National Bioethics Council on 22 May 2012 under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

This Conference which gather speakers who are mostly from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Taiwan as well as from the West such as Belgium, France, Scotland and United Kingdom is seen as an excellent opening to further enhance the study and understanding of bioethics in the local scene through knowledge sharing and exchange of ideas by scholars and policy makers of various disciplines.
