Workshop on Streamlining the Standard Operating Procedures for Crisis Management

The Centre for Political Studies and Economic Diplomacy (PSED), IDFR organised a programme titled, Workshop on Streamlining the Standard Operating Procedures for Crisis Management on 21-22 September 2022 at Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara.

The workshop was attended by a total of 20 participants consist of officers from various departments in Wisma Putra, Prime Minister’s Department, and IDFR.

The goal of this workshop was to produce an effective and comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in crisis management at Malaysian embassies and high commissions by specifically focusing on the line of communication and reporting as well as guidelines in managing crises. This workshop will serve as a guide for the Centre in preparing a new course on crisis management and preparedness for officers and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia and other government agencies, who will be serving in Malaysian missions abroad.

In achieving this objective, the participants were required to revise and update the line of communication and reporting in the Standard Operating Procedures for Humanitarian Crisis Management Handbook produced by Wisma Putra in 2013.

The first day commenced with a brief presentation of the background, objectives and direction of the workshop. It then followed with an extensive experience sharing session by the participants who have been directly involved in the management of various crises while serving at Malaysian missions abroad.

On the second day, the discussion was directed towards the preparations to implement an evacuation plan by Missions including management of missions’ funds, documents and Malaysians’ database, as well as preparations in terms of logistics and personal needs.

The two-day session managed to gather important information in building effective line of communication and reporting, along with various suggestions for officers and staff serving at Malaysian missions to better prepare themselves in times of crises.
