The Centre for Languages and Cultural Diplomacy (CLCD) has kicked off the year with its first English communication course tailored for support staff from the Institute Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. It is based on the need to equip support staff with essential communication skills. Effective communication promotes a shared understanding of organisational goals, priorities and procedures as well as reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings or errors among staff and stakeholders. It also fosters a positive work culture which encourages organisational staff to feel connected and supported at their workplace.

Let’s Communicate! spanning two (2) series, aids support staff by explaining the importance of effective communication at the workplace, identifying the challenges that come up in a communication process and the ways in addressing the challenges; in addition to applying the elements of effective communication such as attitude, verbal, and non-verbal cues to communicate comprehensively and confidently at the workplace.

In each series, a total of 34 participants, Grades 11 – 29, engaged in practical activities set out for them. It enabled them to apply their knowledge and skills learnt throughout the course in their simulations of various scenarios to overcome communication-based challenges, as well as receiving constructive feedback from instructors and peers. As a result, participants emerged as more confident speakers of English to objectively hone their communicative skills in the real-life work environment.
