The Pre-Posting Orientation Course for Home-Based Staff and Spouses (SPKM 1/2025), held from 4 to 14 February 2025 at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) was a resounding success. The course aimed to equip Grade 41 officers and above, along with their spouses with essential knowledge of diplomatic practices, consular services, administrative procedures, and international engagement strategies in preparation for their assignments abroad.
The first series of the course brought together 77 participants from various ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ministry of Transport, Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysia Police, Immigration Department of Malaysia, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, Malaysian Investment Development Authority, Tourism Malaysia and Lembaga Tabung Haji.
Over eight days, participants engaged in comprehensive sessions covering key topics relevant to their roles including inspectorate matters, asset management, financial administration, protocol and consular services to highlight resource management and operational efficiency at Missions. A significant component of the course focused on strengthening Malaysia’s global outreach. Malaysia’s strengths and opportunities in education services, healthcare tourism and trade promotion were underscored to the participants so they are eloquent to promote Malaysia as an investment and tourism destination. The programme also emphasised integrity, security awareness, and crisis management highlighting the importance of ethical considerations and safety measures. The course also include tailored sessions on interpersonal and social etiquette.
One of the key highlights was an insightful session on the roles and responsibilities of Malaysian diplomatic missions, delivered by YBhg. Dato’ Agus Salim Yusof, Director of the Centre for Leadership, Negotiation, and Public Diplomacy. He shared his vast experience during his postings at Missions. He emphasised the importance of strengthening Malaysia’s international relations and projecting a positive national image. The interactive session allowed participants to discuss real diplomatic challenges and better understand their roles in supporting Malaysia’s global engagements.
The course concluded with a closing ceremony officiated by the Director General of IDFR, YBhg. Dato’ Syed Bakri Syed Abdul Rahman. He commended the participants for their dedication and acknowledged the contributions of all involved. The overwhelmingly positive feedback received affirmed the course’s effectiveness in preparing officers and their spouses with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their diplomatic postings.
